Waiting

It was the holiday weekend. Black Friday plus one and crowds of shoppers were still packing the stores. Having never really participated in the post Thanksgiving rush to buy, being out today afforded a chance to be an observer rather than a consumer. Everywhere you looked the shops and sidewalks of downtown Portland,Oregon were busy. Shopping bags full as families of all sizes were out enjoying the day.

A quiet moment near the end of the day captured the consequence of a day filled with frenzy and excitement. Especially if you were a child.

The observation was only from the other side of the window. The afternoon light fading in the sky above. A story pretty much captured in one shot.

Part exhaustion. Part reward for a day trailing after those older than him. His posture somewhere between deep recline and nearly asleep. A napkin spread in preparation as much as anticipation. I never hung around to see the reward arrive. The picture here was the waiting. Body language of a child caught between the twin worlds of holiday excitement and fatigue.
