To my friend Ivan

black and white mailboxes on a dusty desert road.
A dusty road holds shadows from mailboxes in the Arizona desert.

It has been a busy week. The end of the holidays and then directly back on the road scouting locations in Arizona for a project that might come here later next month. A quick roadside stop at an abandon filling station in the middle of the hot desert between Phoenix and Tucson I grabbed a couple of pictures of abandoned buildings and signposts. The morning light casting long shadows in the dusty air.

No matter how far off the beaten path you find yourself sometimes social media always seems to catch up with you. This time it was not someones amazing lunch plating, but the passing of a friend I had worked with over many years. A very talented and funny guy who I had mountains of fond memories working with.

The day was young with lots still to accomplish so I pushed on finishing up after sunset. A picture I was excited to share for the DPG I found just as I was rolling into town. Back in my hotel room I was quickly culling through, looking for the picture I was hoping to post this evening. There in the edit was this random picture of a bunch of mailboxes I had snapped just before I jumped back into the car and checked the FB message that told me of Ivan’s death.

On the mailbox. Front and center. Was his name. Mendoza.

It’s not the greatest picture. Nothing like the great photos I was able to take because of getting to work with Ivan. The foreshadowing of his name on the mailbox was undeniable and so it is my choice here today. The other photo I took can wait until another time. This photo is in memory to my friend.
