Bel Aire

Like an insect drawn to a street lamp, neon at night has much the same effect on me. The fixtures themselves hold my fascination, but it is the shadows they cast and the effect on the surrounding structures that is the most interesting for me.

As a broad light source, they sometimes cast an otherworldly effect while penetrating the dark sky. This location had many signs illuminated this evening, but this one in particular best captured what I was hoping to find. The fade from bright to twilight. The hint of a secondary light source. And of course the wonderful gradation across the surfaces that surround it.

Just a slight crop to clean up the distracting edges and a tiny boost in contrast. Exactly as I saw it, confirming my endearing love of this form of glass sculpture.
