Fog Filters

It’s the defining characteristic of this area. The thing most likely to pop into people’s minds when you mention the Pacific Northwest besides microbrews, good coffee, liberal politics, and the Grateful Dead.

Trees. Lots of big trees across an expansive landscape.

As the day’s transition to summer the cooling and warming of this forested land mass interplays with the damp coastal air. Nearing sunrise a dense fog often develops moving ashore as the early sun warms the clouds from above eventually penetrating the moisture below.

To my eye, the trees are giant filters straining the water drops from the morning air and creating long moisture shadows of sunlight as summer finally takes hold on the hillsides below.
