It’s been a week, but the shine from a month in Asia still lingers. With a soft rain falling here in the Northwest and a folder full of images to edit, it felt like the right state of mind to lean into.
On a riverbank in Viet Nam, from my perspective, it looked like way too much work for the little I’m sure the workers were making. Still, undeterred, they moved one by one along a single plank stretched between the shore and a small commercial river pram just a few feet away.
Taken as a wide view, the scene was compelling enough, but the true beauty, both in reality and visually, was in the detail of the dance: the unspoken, unhesitating movement up and down the walkway, each man carrying a 35-kilo sack of rice. It’s something only urgency and skill can produce, almost without thought. It was mesmerizing to witness, yet so everyday it was virtually invisible.
Unless you stop long enough to really look.
