It’s county fair time here in the West, and while I mostly go for the corn dogs and snow cones, there’s a chaos I find strangely appealing. Especially on the midway, where the motion of rides and riders mixes with the smell of fried food and the sound of laughter spilling from every attraction. It becomes a universe of color, motion, and nostalgia.
Waiting for that sweet spot on a clear summer evening, when the sunset fades into deep twilight, is one of my favorite times. To the eye, it can be barely perceptible, but through the camera it never ceases to amaze me: the depth and richness that comes alive in longer exposures. From there, it becomes a simple game of timing and composition…as I finish off my corn dog.
