The constant rain today here in the Pacific Northwest has kept most
everyone indoors. The heavy overcast sky and drenched landscape an early
reminder that winters here are not for the timid.
Immersing myself in an old edit, I find possibilities opening up despite
the gray skies outside—memories of places and moments far removed from
here in almost every way. One particular image from the porch of our
home in Indonesia brings back the sense of just how far from “home” we
truly were back then. So many things that felt foreign upon our arrival
slowly became familiar, transforming that distant place into something
like home as the months and years rolled on. The day by day drift from
one world to another felt almost imperceptible. Yet, years later, it
feels as though that chapter belongs to another persons life.
The beauty of photography is clear to me today, as each picture offers a
window into those past moments, reviving emotions that might otherwise
be buried. My life’s record only a click away.
It’s comforting on a day like today to remember how the power of the image can bring distant memories close again.
