Fiddlehead

With a picture firmly in my mind, I headed out when the sun makes a rare late-in-the-day appearance. The woods near here are ladened with ground cover the largest of which are the many types of ferns that thrive in the moist ground protected from the direct sunlight by the towering forest.

As the Fiddlehead ferns emerge from the long winter they uncoil from tightly wound bundles into the long elegant stocks that fill the surrounding floor. In macro there is lots of residual unfolding still going on – yet when viewed from a distance it might appear differently.
The constant growth and unfolding as spring arrives signals a sure sign that summer is not far behind.
